To serve the wine in a decanter: to air it and, if there is any, leave the sediment in the bottle.
Decanting serves two things: to separate sediments of an old wine and to open a young, closed red. A quarter of an hour is enough in many cases; an hour is theatre.
An aged Monastrell thanks the air. A fruity young wine, at times, does not.
